Why it matters

Why a TV shouldn’t go out with the trash.

Tube TVs contain lead

The glass in CRT TVs contains lead, which is why they need special handling.

Take them to the City HHW at 7030 Culebra Rd.

Older flat screens contain mercury

Many LCD TVs made before about 2010 use fluorescent backlights that contain a small amount of mercury.

The City site or your TV maker’s program can handle them.

The City asks you to keep it out of the cart

San Antonio treats e-waste as household hazardous waste, which never goes in curbside carts.

Use a drop-off site instead.

Before you drop off

Before you get rid of a TV.

Smart TVs remember your account logins, so start there.

Sign out and reset

Sign out of Netflix, YouTube and your other apps, then do a factory reset from the TV’s settings.

Check your brand

Look up your TV maker on the TCEQ list. There may be a drop-off or mail-back option.

Bring ID and your CPS bill

The City site asks for both.

Call 311 first

Hours and accepted items can change, especially for very large TVs.
