Why it matters

A retired server holds more than an old laptop.

Many drives, one box

A single server can hold several drives with years of company data, backups and databases on them.

Every drive is sanitized, and the method is recorded for each one.

Network gear keeps your settings

Firewalls, routers and switches can still store configurations, VPN settings and saved credentials.

Factory-reset network gear before pickup if you can. The drives are on us.

It’s heavy and awkward

Servers and rack gear don’t fit in a car trunk, and a server closet can fill a truck.

Free pickup for 20 or more units, Monday to Friday.

How it works

From the server closet to a certificate.

The same steps whether it’s one tower server or a room full of rack gear.

Drives recorded and sanitized

Drives are recorded by serial number for your certificate. SSDs are purged, hard drives are destroyed.

Everything else recycled

Chassis, switches and cabling are recycled. Nothing goes to the landfill.

NIST SP 800-88

Why server SSDs are purged and hard drives are destroyed.

NIST Special Publication 800-88 describes three levels of media sanitization: clear, purge and destroy. Hard drives store data on spinning platters, so physical destruction is the most reliable option. SSDs keep spare areas that an overwrite can miss, so they’re purged using methods built for flash storage.

Servers often hold a mix of both, sometimes in RAID arrays. Each drive is handled on its own, and your certificate shows the method used on each one.

NIST publishes guidelines. It doesn’t audit or approve companies.
