Know the difference before you buy

Refurbished vs used computers: what’s the difference?

A used computer is sold as-is, the way the last owner left it. A refurbished computer has been inspected, tested, cleaned and set up again by a seller who stands behind it, usually with a warranty. Refurbished can cost a bit more. In return, you get a computer that’s been checked and a seller to call if something fails.

Side by side

What you get with each.

Refurbished:

  • Inspected for physical damage
  • Every part tested
  • Cleaned, with a fresh Windows install and updates
  • Previous owner’s data securely destroyed
  • A warranty, and a seller you can find again

Used, sold as-is:

  • Sold the way the last owner left it
  • Often checked only to see that it turns on
  • Old files and accounts may still be on it
  • Usually no warranty and no returns
  • Often bought from a stranger online

Everything we sell is professionally refurbished. Nothing leaves our shop as-is.

The risk with used

Three things that go wrong with a used computer.

Most used computers work on the day you buy them. The trouble tends to show up later.

Hidden wear

A failing hard drive, a worn-out battery or a fan packed with dust won’t show up when you check a computer for five minutes in a parking lot.

Refurbished means every part is tested before it’s sold.

Someone else’s data and accounts

Used computers often still have the last owner’s files on them, or they’re still signed in to the last owner’s Microsoft account.

Refurbished means the old data is securely destroyed and Windows is installed fresh.

Nowhere to go when it fails

If a used computer dies a month later, the seller has usually moved on and isn’t answering messages.

Ours include a 90-day parts-and-labor warranty, handled at our shop.

Read the label

Refurbished, renewed, pre-owned, open box: what the labels mean.

“Refurbished” isn’t a protected word. Some sellers use it for any computer that’s been wiped. What matters is the work behind the label, so ask what was actually done: was it inspected, were the parts tested, was Windows installed fresh, and is there a warranty in writing?

Pre-owned usually just means used. Open box means it was returned or used as a display model, often nearly new.

Manufacturer refurbished means the original brand restored it, usually with the brand’s own warranty. Seller refurbished, like ours, means a shop did the work and backs it with its own warranty.

Either way, a refurbished computer is only as good as the seller behind it.

Before you buy

Four questions to ask any seller.

Whatever the listing calls it, ask these four questions. Our refurbished computer buyer’s guide has the full checklist.

What was tested?

“It turns on” isn’t a test. Ask whether the drive, memory, battery, ports and screen were checked.

Is there a warranty in writing?

Ask how long it lasts, whether it covers parts and labor, and what it leaves out.

Was it wiped and set up fresh?

The last owner’s data should be securely destroyed, with a clean Windows install and current updates.

Where do I go if it fails?

A shop with an address and opening hours is easier to find than an online seller who stops answering.

FAQs

Common questions about refurbished vs used.

What’s the difference between a refurbished and a used computer?

A used computer is sold as-is, the way the last owner left it, usually with no warranty. A refurbished computer has been inspected, tested, cleaned and set up with a fresh install by a seller who stands behind it, usually with a warranty.

Is it better to buy refurbished or used?

For most people, refurbished. You know the parts were tested and the old data is gone, and if something fails you have a warranty and a seller to go back to. A used computer can be cheaper, but you take on the risk yourself.

Isn’t a refurbished computer just a used one?

It has had a previous owner, yes. The difference is the work done before it’s sold again: inspection, testing, cleaning, a fresh Windows install and a warranty.

Why does refurbished cost more than used?

You’re paying for the testing, cleaning, fresh install and secure data destruction, and for a warranty. That’s the part that protects you if something goes wrong.

What does your warranty cover?

Every computer we sell includes a 90-day parts-and-labor warranty. If a part fails in that time, we repair or replace it at our shop. Physical damage and liquid damage aren’t covered.

Do you sell used computers?

No. Every computer we sell is professionally refurbished: inspected, tested, cleaned, set up with Windows and updates, and covered by a 90-day parts-and-labor warranty.

Will you buy my old computer?

If it’s working and under five years old, we may buy it for cash. See cash for computers. If not, we recycle it for free.
