Hard Drives Removed From Office Computers For Secure Data Destruction
Medical & Dental Office Computer Recycling

Why it matters

Patient data doesn’t leave with the old computer.

Records live on every drive

Scheduling, charting, billing and imaging software leave patient data on front-desk PCs, workstations and servers.

Every drive is sanitized: SSDs purged, hard drives destroyed.

You need a paper trail

When a computer is retired, your practice should be able to show what happened to the drive that was in it.

Your certificate lists every drive by serial number and method.

Office time is patient time

Nobody at the front desk has time to wipe drives or haul equipment across town.

Free pickup for 20 or more units, Monday to Friday.

How it works

Recorded, sanitized, documented.

The same steps for every drive, whether it’s one laptop or a full office refresh.

What HHS says about disposal

Federal guidance points to NIST SP 800-88.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services guidance on disposing of protected health information doesn’t require one specific method. It says practices need written procedures for disposing of electronic records and the hardware that holds them, and that electronic media can be cleared, purged or destroyed. For how to do that, it points to NIST SP 800-88.

We follow NIST SP 800-88: SSDs are purged and hard drives are destroyed, and the method is recorded for each drive. Your certificate documents what happened to each one, so you can file it with your own records.

Your practice decides what its own policies require. Questions about your obligations are best answered by your compliance officer or attorney.

FAQs

Common questions from medical and dental offices.

How should a medical office dispose of old computers?

Make sure the patient data on every drive is unrecoverable, and keep a record of what happened to each one. We sanitize every drive following NIST SP 800-88 and give you a certificate listing each drive by serial number and the method used.

What happens to the computers after the drives are sanitized?

They’re recycled. Nothing goes to the landfill.

What’s on the certificate?

Every drive by serial number, the method used on it (purged or destroyed) and the date. It’s free for businesses on request.

Do you take imaging workstations and servers?

Yes. Computers, workstations, servers, laptops, monitors, printers and networking gear, working or not. Ask us about anything else before pickup.

Is it free?

Yes, for 20 or more units picked up, and always free when you drop off. Data destruction and business certificates are free too. For fewer than 20 units, a small pickup fee may apply.

Can a small practice drop off instead?

Yes. Bring computers or loose drives to our shop Tuesday to Saturday, 12:00 to 5:30 pm, with no appointment, and ask for a certificate.

How do we schedule a pickup?

Request a pickup online or call 210-710-2020. Pickups are scheduled Monday to Friday.
