Is an OptiPlex right for you?

Where a refurbished OptiPlex fits.

A good fit for:

  • Home offices and small businesses
  • Email, documents, spreadsheets and browsing
  • Video calls and online classes
  • Point-of-sale and front-desk computers
  • Older software that needs Windows 10 (ask about our Retro PCs)

Look elsewhere for:

  • Modern gaming
  • Heavy video editing or 3D work
  • Anything that needs a full-size graphics card in a Micro or small model

Need more graphics power? We often have high-end refurbished gaming PCs. See refurbished gaming computers.

Three sizes

Micro, small form factor or tower.

Same OptiPlex inside. The difference is how much room it takes and how much you can add later.

Micro

About the size of a hardcover book. It can sit behind a monitor or under a desk and uses an external power adapter, like a laptop.

Best for tight desks. See mini PCs.

Small form factor (SFF)

A slim desktop that fits on or under a desk, with room for a second drive and a low-profile expansion card.

The most common office OptiPlex.

Tower (MT)

The largest case, with the most room for drives and expansion cards, and the easiest to work inside.

Best if you plan to upgrade.

Reading the model number

What the OptiPlex numbers mean.

The first digit is the tier. 3000-series models are Dell’s entry business desktops, 5000-series are the mainstream line, and 7000-series are the premium line, often with extra management features for IT departments.

The rest of the number roughly tracks the year. A 7050 is newer than a 7040, and a 7090 is newer than a 7070. The listing always shows the exact processor.

Watch out for reused names. Dell sold an OptiPlex 7010 in 2012 and gave a new model the same name in 2023. They’re very different computers, so check the processor in the listing as well as the model name.

Want Windows 11? It needs UEFI firmware that supports Secure Boot, and a TPM 2.0 chip. Our listings say which version of Windows is installed, and we can tell you whether a model has both.

Before you buy

Four things to check on any OptiPlex.

Our listings show all four. Ask us if you’re not sure.

The processor

An Intel Core i5 handles everyday office work. Go for a Core i7 if you run a lot at once.

16GB of RAM and an SSD

Most of our OptiPlex desktops have both, which keeps Windows quick. 32GB helps with heavy multitasking.

The version of Windows

Most run Windows 11. Our Retro PCs run Windows 10 for older software and equipment that won’t run on Windows 11.

Ports and Wi-Fi

Check the video ports match your monitor, and look for Wi-Fi in the listing if you won’t use a network cable.

FAQs

Common questions about the Dell OptiPlex.

Are refurbished Dell OptiPlex computers good?

For office work, yes. OptiPlex desktops are built for years of daily business use. Ours are professionally refurbished, set up with Windows and the latest updates, and include a 90-day parts-and-labor warranty.

What’s the difference between OptiPlex 3000, 5000 and 7000?

They’re Dell’s tiers. 3000-series models are entry-level business desktops, 5000-series are mainstream, and 7000-series are premium, often with extra IT management features.

What does SFF, MT or Micro mean on an OptiPlex?

They’re the case sizes. Micro is the smallest and uses an external power adapter. SFF is small form factor, a slim desktop. MT is mini tower, the largest, with the most room for upgrades.

Does a refurbished OptiPlex run Windows 11?

Most of ours do. Windows 11 needs UEFI firmware that supports Secure Boot, and a TPM 2.0 chip. The listing shows which version of Windows is installed.

Can I add a graphics card to an OptiPlex?

Towers have the most room. Small form factor models take only low-profile cards, and Micro models don’t take a graphics card. Call us and we’ll tell you what fits.

Do you have a specific OptiPlex model?

Inventory changes every week. Check the desktops page, or call 210-710-2020 and we’ll tell you what’s on hand.

Can I see an OptiPlex before I buy it?

Yes. Come in Tuesday to Saturday, 12:00 to 5:30 pm. If you have a model in mind, call first to check it’s still in stock. We don’t ship.
